SAKIMA DEATH IS IN THE AIR

Sakima’s electronic productions always hold a much deeper meaning, and new track ‘Death Is In The Air’ is no exception. The moment of inspiration came about when Sakima was listening to a podcast for And The Writer Is... with Justin Tranter, who’s famously written songs for Britney Spears, Gwen Stefani Kelly Clarkson, Selena Gomez, Justin Bieber, DNCE, Kesha and even more top-tier names. As Sakima reflects: "He talked about how especially since the AIDS pandemic of the '80s, in the music industry being gay is seen as death. I think he literally said 'gay is death.’ The way he articulated that summed up so much of my entire career as an artist battling against homophobia in the industry, and it totally shattered me. And then I had this flood of lyrics come to my brain and ended up making this song about being queer in the music industry, but also just day-to-day life as a queer person." With this context, suddenly you’re hearing the ‘80s-esque drum pads and pop songwriting in fresh light. Peppered with painful statements that convey Sakima’s serious frustration with an industry and a world that needs to embrace people for their artistry, no matter their sexuality or gender, ‘Death Is In The Air’ is a statement to dance to. - HT
